Stage 1

Stage 1 is all about gaining confidence in the water, but in our club environment we expect swimmers to show independence early on. From the very first sessions, children are encouraged to listen, learn, and take their first steps towards becoming strong, capable swimmers.

Objectives:

    •    Gain water confidence without support.

    •    Move independently over short distances.

    •    Show good listening and focus in lessons.

Stage 2

At Stage 2, swimmers move beyond water confidence to start developing control and discipline. We encourage them to take ownership of their movements in the pool, focusing on good body position and laying down the habits that will carry through to higher levels.

Objectives:

    •    Demonstrate correct floating and gliding positions.

    •    Swim basic strokes over a distance of at least 5 metres.

    •    Show increased independence without equipment.

Stage 3

Stage 3 demands more precision and consistency. Swimmers begin to link skills together, travel further with better efficiency, and show the determination needed to progress. Technique becomes sharper and the expectations for focus and effort step up significantly.

Objectives:

    •    Swim 10 metres of a recognisable stroke with good technique.

    •    Begin to use breathing patterns effectively.

    •    Combine skills such as push, glide, and rotation smoothly.

Stage 4

Stage 4 is where swimmers begin to feel more like “real” swimmers, as they learn all four strokes in greater detail. The focus is on building technique and confidence while adding new skills that prepare them for longer swims.

Objectives:

    •    Swim all four strokes with correct body position.

    •    Demonstrate basic rotation and sculling skills.

    •    Swim 10–15 metres with consistent technique.

Stage 5

Stage 5 helps swimmers link their skills together with more flow and control. They begin to swim longer distances with greater ease and start to develop the building blocks for more advanced techniques.

Objectives:

    •    Swim 25 metres on a minimum of three strokes.

    •    Begin to develop dolphin leg kick and introduce simple turns.

    •    Show controlled breathing across a length.

Stage 6

Stage 6 focuses on building stamina while maintaining good technique. Swimmers develop consistency across all strokes and begin to feel comfortable swimming longer distances.

Objectives:

    •    Swim 75 metres using a range of strokes.

    •    Show confidence with starts, turns, and finishes.

    •    Swim longer distances without losing form.

Stage 7 (Black swimming caps)

Stage 7 is the final step before joining a training group. The emphasis is on putting all strokes and skills together, swimming with confidence, and being ready for the next stage of the journey in a club environment.

Objectives:

    •    Swim 100 metres competently, using at least three strokes.

    •    Demonstrate effective skills such as dives, turns, and sculling.

    •    Show readiness to progress into entry-level club squads.
